Equine Electronics has developed an inexpensive timer for horse racing events that works great for Autocross racing.
For just 185.00 plus shipping you'll get a set of infrared electronic eyes, two tripods, And a specially modified digital stopwatch. You will also receive a second cable that will allow you to attach the eyes directly to a laptop computer. You also get a Stopwatch program to interact with the eyes via a standard serial port.

The watch is interfaced with the digital stopwatch via a standard Telephone cord. You can add as much extension cord as you might need.
The staopwatch has hundredth of a second accuracy, and the computer program goes down to the thousanth of a second.

The electric eyes have a range of 80 feet. So you can make your start/stop gate as wide as you need.

It's even possible to add an extra set of eyes and have a separate start and finish line.
